The state of Missouri is celebrating Gifted Education Awareness Week right now,, thanks to students in Ms. Phoebe Pohlman’s gifted education classes at Perry County School District 32.
Ms. Pohlman and her students used the skills they are developing in gifted education to effectively communicate the reasons why they believed the state should designate a week for this recognition. The students who participated in advocating for a special week to recognize these exceptional students and their unique gifts and challenges are in Grades 4-6 from Perryville Elementary and Perry County Middle Schools. Their persuasive presentation to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education resulted in the designation of the second week of February (Feb. 10-14) for this celebration of gifted education, its students, and its educators. Gifted education extends through high school at District 32, with Mrs. Karen Krieger serving the middle school (Grades 6-8) population.
